Mistake to Avoid When Cleaning Window Treatments
Like everything in your home, window treatments must be cleaned regularly to keep them in good condition. All window coverings should be lightly cleaned once per month and receive a deep cleaning twice a year. Fabric coverings, such as cellular shades and Roman shades, will require a bit more effort than solid treatments, like blinds.
Hunter Douglas window coverings are made to last but can become damaged if not correctly cared for. Removing dust, pet hair, and dirt not only improves the appearance of your blinds but also maintains air quality for those with asthma or allergies. Fortunately, most mistakes made when cleaning window treatments are easy to avoid. We’ve put together some tips for you to use to properly clean your curtains.
The most frequent mistake made is using too harsh cleaners for the material being cleaned. Many people believe the stronger a chemical is, the better it will clean. Unfortunately, this rarely applies to window coverings. Strong cleaners can cause more harm than good when misused, including staining and discoloring your window coverings.
A second easily avoided mistake is not reading the care instructions. The majority of manufacturers provide instructions for properly cleaning window treatments, including removing dirt and mild stains. The care procedures will provide you with products you can safely use. Certain window treatments, such as those made of sheer material or silk, require a more gentle approach.
You should always perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area whenever cleaning a window covering. Wait a few hours after application to see any fading or discoloration. If the cleaner doesn’t react well with the material, you will need to use a different method for cleaning. If you cannot achieve good results on your own, it may be time to call a professional cleaning service.
Time is of the essence when treating spills or stains. You need to treat the area before the stain has a chance to set in the fibers. A damp cloth should be used to absorb as much liquid as possible, and a mild cleaning solution should be used to remove any of the stains.
