Window Treatments for French Doors
When it comes to covering French doors, not all window treatments are created equal. Since French doors swing, rather than slide, they are actually easier to cover than sliding glass doors. In fact, most products that you find on sliding glass doors, such as full drapery or vertical blinds, do not work well with French doors. We’ll take you through the steps of choosing the best Hunter Douglas window coverings for your French doors.
There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for window treatments for French doors. The first, is to remember that the hardware must be mounted well outside the operating area so the doors can swing open unimpeded. In other words, you must ensure the hardware is hung above the door and that it extends to the sides of the frame. The good news is that nearly any type of blind or shade can be mounted on French doors, which makes it very easy to match your French doors to other windows in your home.
When choosing a covering, opt for one with a low-profile headrail, such as Roman shades. A slim profile will give the sleekest appearance with the best functionality. A deep headrail will extend beyond the edge of the door and could make opening the door fully difficult or impossible. You will also want to make sure your window treatment of choice has “hold downs” to keep your shades or blinds from swinging around when you open or close the door. Honeycomb shades help provide a layer of insulation to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home without using extra energy.
