How to Add Contrast to Your Decor

It's love at first sight when design components collide. The contrasting decor makes spaces more exciting and creates flow. Your preference will determine if your contrast is obvious or more subtle. We're sharing our favorite tips if you're curious about how to add contrast to your decor.

Colors

Contrasting colors is one of the easiest and most common ways to introduce contrast to your home's decor. Black and white are foolproof colors to combine, but you can use unexpected pairings of color to spice up a space. Shades of pink are a nice counterpart to greens, and monochromatic looks are always in style, no matter what colors you love.

Patterns

Many people think mixing patterns in a single room is a big-time "nope." On the contrary, pairing patterns gives a room an eclectic, exciting aesthetic. Try a classic, like vertical stripes, with a bold floral print. Another option is to combine a large-scale pattern with a more delicate repeating print. Designer Roller Shades and Design Studio™ Roman Shades are available in hundreds of color and pattern options to match any existing style.

Textures

Texture usually plays a supporting role in design schemes, but the whole show would fall apart without it. Think shag area rugs on hardwood floors, cable knit throw blankets, and textured window treatments. Provenance® Woven Wood Shades put texture on display at your window, but with a large selection of colors and weaves, your woven shades can be center stage or stage crew; it's all up to you.

Shapes & Scale

Following the traditional living room setup will leave you with a space full of straight lines or curved lines, but not both. Lay a contrasting shape foundation by first choosing your coffee table and main seating. If your coffee table is oval or round, go with a sofa with angular features or vice versa. Work in unique pieces, such as round ottomans and low-profile armchairs.

Playing with items of noticeably different sizes will give unexpected style to your home. Try oversized wall art with smaller furniture beneath and in the surrounding area. Another easy strategy is to use overstuffed furniture with small and medium-sized throw blankets and pillows.

Metals

Pairing different metals with varying surfaces will give any space sophisticated contrast, especially in your bathroom or kitchen. To keep an area balanced, choose one metal and finish for all lighting and another for hardware, like handles and pulls. Design Studio™ Custom Drapes have premium metal hardware with exclusive finishes, like satin nickel, brushed bronze, and matte black.
